Forward deployed engineer now means three different jobs. We have run engineers inside client codebases for more than twenty years, and for most of that time nobody had a name for it.
Bloomberry read 1,000 job postings with the title and published the results in November 2025. 60% are engineers who embed with a customer and write production code. 30% are sales engineers with a new label, who run demos and hand the work to implementation teams. 10% build internal tools for sales, marketing and customer success. 58% of the postings come from companies of 11 to 200 people.
Martin Fowler, chief scientist at Thoughtworks, wrote on September 24, 2026 that he rolls his eyes at the hype, because much of it restates what he and many others have argued for decades, and that he still sees something valuable in it: developers working next to the people the software serves.
When a company of that size asks us for this role to start with AI, we skip the title and ask what has to be different in their customer's system in ninety days, and who writes the code that makes it different. The answer picks the job.
