The largest annual survey of developers now puts weekly use of coding agents at 90%.

JetBrains Research, which sells development tools, published in August 2026 the adoption section of its Developer Ecosystem Survey 2026, the tenth edition, answered by more than 15,000 professional developers worldwide and reweighted by region, employment and language. As of May to July 2026, 90% of professional developers were using AI coding agents at work at least weekly, local agents or remote cloud agents, and 68% daily. The report's own reading is that agents are carving out a place in the toolkit across the industry; the rest of the post ranks vendors, which this note leaves out.

Simon Willison, creator of Datasette and independent researcher on AI tools, on X: the more time he spends with coding agents, the more convinced he is that they make software engineering harder, and that using them well takes extraordinary discipline and knowledge.

In the client teams we work with, the 68% who use an agent daily split in two: developers who rebuilt their workflow around it and developers who added a chat window to the old one.

Weekly use is now the floor. The difference between teams is what happens after the agent answers.
